Faculty of Humanities, Development and Social Sciences

Welcome to the Faculty of Humanities, Development and Social Sciences
The Faculty of Humanities, Development and Social Sciences (HDSS) is spread across two campuses (Howard College and Pietermarizburg). It has a strong teaching, research and community outreach profiles and offers the student a qualification based on an up-to-date and relevant curriculum in a College which regards transformation as a priority.

The Faculty of Humanities, Development and Social Sciences administers a wide range of undergraduate degrees of international standing. Those interested in the intellectual concerns of the Humanities, the Arts and the Social Sciences will find many stimulating subjects which can be pursued as majors or as ancillary courses towards a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Social Science degree. This type of degree can form a useful background to postgraduate study in one or other of the majors, in Education and in certain professional disciplines.

In addition, those interested in more directed study may register for a programme degree (see below) or for one of the specific qualifications (such as the Bachelor of Social Work), which can lead to professional status - sometimes upon graduation with the degree itself, but more often by providing access to postgraduate study toward professional qualification.

Similarly, diplomas are offered in Music Performance and in Proficiency in Translation.

For those applicants who would not otherwise qualify for university study, or who would not be able to compete for a place in degree courses, there are access routes and foundation courses available.

Finally, the Faculty offers a range of certificates which can be obtained for studies in certain areas that do not lead to graduation with a degree or the award of a diploma.
